OpenAI is launching ChatGPT Work, an agent within ChatGPT that handles complete workflows across apps and files. The product runs on the recently released GPT-5.6 and builds on Codex technology. The rollout is phased, with a usage model that differs from regular chat.
About two weeks after the U.S. government restricted access to GPT-5.6 to a select number of organizations, OpenAI received the green light for a broader rollout. That model became widely available this week in the Sol, Terra, and Luna variants. At the same time, the company is introducing ChatGPT Work for mobile, web, and desktop.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Work as an agent that can work on complex projects for hours on end and deliver finished outputs, such as an Excel or Word document. Think of a prompt that turns customer research into a campaign letter, creates marketing assets from it, and adapts them for different markets, while maintaining context at every step.
None of this is entirely new. Many of the underlying features already existed in ChatGPT or Codex, with Codex being more geared toward developers. ChatGPT Work appears to be primarily a response to Claude CoWork. That tool is also available in desktop apps, has access to local files, and can work independently to deliver a final result. Microsoft also introduced CoPilot CoWork some time ago.
Plugins make a comeback
The biggest addition is a new Unified Plugins Directory that enables integrations with third-party services. At launch, this includes Google Drive, SharePoint, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Salesforce, GitHub, and Dropbox, among others. Users can invoke a plugin with an “@” mention, or let ChatGPT determine which source is relevant.
On the security front, OpenAI highlights an Auto-Review feature that uses advanced models to verify critical actions before they are executed. According to the company, during red-teaming, this feature blocked 100 percent of attempts to extract protected data.
Phased rollout and availability
On the web and mobile, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users will be the first to gain access. Plus and Business customers will follow in the coming days, according to OpenAI. Via the desktop app for Mac and Windows, the product is immediately available to all subscribers, including those on the free plan. As of this writing, the Windows link still directs users to the Codex app.
Usage works differently from regular chat. ChatGPT Work shares the same agent usage pool with Codex, ChatGPT for Excel, and Workspace Agents. How much a task costs depends on its size, complexity, and the chosen model. Enterprise and Edu administrators can set limits at the workspace, group, and user levels via Spend Controls.
