The latest release is Microsoft’s way of seeing how quickly they can release builds one after the other.
Microsoft has released build 20279 for Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. The release is basically a new Windows 10 preview. However, it seems that the main objective of the release is to to test Microsoft’s update capabilities.
In other words, they want to just put out new release, rather than actually offer new functionality or features.
Brandon LeBlanc, Microsoft Windows Insider program manager at Microsoft, explained this latest build in a blog post this week. “We wanted to test our ability to quickly follow up a flight with another flight,” he said.
LeBlanc also explained that Windows Insiders who updated to Build 21277 (RS_PRERELEASE) will not be offered this build. This is because they are already on a newer build.
He promised that Microsoft is working on getting a new build out to those Insiders soon. They expect to move all Insiders in the Dev Channel back to receiving builds from RS_PRERELEASE sometime after the holidays, he said.
Known issues in this release
LeBlanc also noted that there were several known issues that Microsoft are addressing. “We’re looking into reports of the update process hanging for extended periods of time when attempting to install a new build,” he said.
Live previews for pinned sites aren’t enabled for all Insiders yet. LeBlanc said that users may see a grey window when hovering over the thumbnail in the taskbar. They are also working on enabling the new taskbar experience for existing pinned sites. In the meantime, users can unpin the site from the taskbar, remove it from the edge://apps page, and then re-pin the site.
Microsoft are also working on a fix for an issue resulting in some users seeing error 0x80070426 when using their Microsoft account to sign into various apps. In the meantime, LeBlanc says, rebooting the PC may resolve this.
