The dual announcements mark a giant leap forward for analytics on the Azure platform.

This week Microsoft announced the general availability (GA) of the latest version of its cloud analytics service, Azure Synapse Analytics. It also announced the its new data governance service called Azure Purview.

The announcements came during a a virtual event titled “Shape Your Future with Azure Data and Analytics.”

What’s in the new Azure Synapse Analytics

Azure Synapse Analytics is a limitless analytics service that brings together data integration, enterprise data warehousing, and big data analytics. It gives customers the freedom to query data on their terms, using either serverless or dedicated resources. The service can deliver this capability at scale.

Azure Synapse offers a unified experience to manage, and serve data for immediate BI and machine learning needs, according to Microsoft.

Julia White, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Azure, explained the new release in a blog post this week.

“With Azure Synapse, organizations can run the full gamut of analytics projects and put data to work much more quickly, productively, and securely, generating insights from all data sources,” she said.

“And, importantly, Azure Synapse combines capabilities spanning the needs of data engineering, machine learning, and BI without creating silos in processes and tools.”

Customers such as Walgreens, Myntra, and P&G have achieved tremendous success with Azure Synapse, White added.

Azure Purview for data governance

Azure Purview is a unified data governance service. It helps enterprises manage and govern their on-premises, multicloud, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) data.

The service allows customers to easily create a holistic, up-to-date map of their data landscape. It also provides automated data discovery, sensitive data classification, and end-to-end data lineage.

“Azure Purview helps discover all data across your organization, track lineage of data, and create a business glossary wherever it is stored,” writes White.

Azure Purview is integrated with Microsoft Information Protection. This means customers can apply the same sensitivity labels defined in Microsoft 365 Compliance Center.

“The combination of Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Purview empowers organizations to invent with purpose by developing the capabilities to achieve both analytical power and predictive power,” White concluded.
