Microsoft deletes accounts that have not been used for two years

Eveline MeijerJuly 8, 2019 5:36 pmSeptember 8, 2019

Microsoft has added new pages to its support page for users with an account. For example, accounts that have not been used for more than two years will be deleted by the company.

The new policy, which contains rules that users must comply with to prevent the deletion of their account, will come into effect on August 30, writes MS Poweruser. According to the new rules, users must log in to their account once every two years if they want it to remain active.

Exceptions

However, there are several exceptions to this rule. For example, if an account is used to purchase a Microsoft product or service or to gain access to such a purchase, the account will remain active even if it is not otherwise used. However, this does not apply to gift cards and purchases and services with subscriptions.

An account also remains active if it has an active Microsoft subscription. After the subscription has expired or is discontinued, it is necessary to log in every two years. Furthermore, an account remains active if it is used to publish applications or games in the Microsoft Store, or to register for a partner Center account.

Microsoft will continue to allow accounts to exist if, for example, users are certified by the company, if there is money available or if it concerns an account that gives permission to a minor to have an account.

View current status

The company has made it possible to see the status of an account. This can be done via the company’s account management website. There you can find how often a user has to log into an account before it is considered inactive.

Microsoft emphasizes that it can take up to 30 days for recent purchases and other account activity to become visible in the activity status.
