GitHub has now made its own Certifications program generally accessible. Interested users can now apply for four certifications.

GitHub recently made its certifications program, previously available only to GitHub partners and employees, now generally accessible.

With these certifications, anyone already working with GitHub could boost their own resume.

Four certification programs

Specifically, GitHub offers four certification programs. The Foundations program gives new “students” an introduction to the GitHub platform, its fundamental concepts and products.

Examples include repository management, commits, branching, merging and project management. They are also taught how to contribute to open source projects on GitHub.

The GitHub Actions program provides an introduction to GitHub actions for automating software development, such as building CD/CD pipelines, managing enterprise GitHub actions and more.

The third program, GitHub Advanced Security (GHAS), focuses exclusively on GitHub Enterprise. In doing so, it emphasizes securing code with advanced security features at every step of the development cycle. This includes evaluating and configuring secret code scanning, code scanning with CodeQL, dependency management especially for private repositories.

Fourth is the GitHub Administration certificate, for everything needed to properly manage a healthy, robust and secure GitHub environment.

Other possibilities

In addition to the training courses, participants are given a handbook to help them prepare for the final exam throughout the course. Participants receive a so-called Credly badge and participant certificate after passing this exam. This serves as proof of certification.

Participating in the Certifications program is somewhat pricey, according to the FAQ page. One exam costs $200. Those who go for a retake, do not receive a discount in the process.

Registration

Interested parties can register on the registration page. Currently, one must indicate whether one is an employee or partner, but that is about to change.

External interested parties can already register on a waiting list via the registration page.
