Stack Overflow and Google Cloud bring Gemini to more developers

By bringing generative AI to Stack Overflow’s developer community, developers should have easier access to information.

To that end, Google Cloud will integrate Gemini into Stack Overflow. Developers can invoke the assistant to get help writing code, for example. “Gemini for Google Cloud is already trained on an extensive collection of publicly available information and code from open-source and third-party platforms. Now, Gemini for Google Cloud will also provide developers with suggestions, code, and answers from Stack Overflow, utilizing the new OverflowAPI,” Stack Overflow explained.

In addition, developers using Gemini for Google Cloud can access Stack Overflow directly from the Google Cloud console. This will make it easier to ask questions of the Stack Overflow community. They do not have to leave the Google environment where they use developer services.

In addition to these immediately visible features, Stack Overflow will use Google’s AI to improve community engagement and content curation. This should lead to faster content review and optimized forum engagement.

Generative AI

Embracing Gemini comes at a time when Stack Overflow is struggling. The company laid off nearly 30 per cent of its staff recently as late last year due to its difficulty in making a profit. The rise of generative AI is a possible reason for Stack Overflow’s problems: the LLMs make developers less dependent on forums to solve their business problems.
