IBM has released IBM Cloud Satellite. The service allows customers to move parts of IBM’s services from the public cloud to their own data centres to create a hybrid cloud.

Customers can run Cloud Satellite on their own servers in their own data centres or, for example, in edge locations. The services work on virtually any system, including competitors’ systems. IBM told SiliconANGLE that Cloud Satellite is based on the Kubernetes framework, combined with technology from Istio for network functions.

IBM mentions several applications for Cloud Satellite in its announcement. For instance, the company talks about workloads related to online teaching, remote working and telehealth. In such scenarios, there are benefits to be gained from the lower latencies offered by closer servers. IBM promises that the same security levels, data privacy, interoperability and open standards that can be expected from hybrid clouds will be guaranteed.

Collaboration with Lumen

To improve the availability of Cloud Satellite, IBM has partnered with Lumen Technologies. Lumen has a wide network of edge platforms, which customers can tap into to deploy Cloud Platform at a nearby location. This also offers advantages in terms of complying with privacy laws in various countries. Lumen has more than 180,000 locations worldwide.

“With the Lumen platform’s broad reach, we are giving our enterprise customers access to IBM Cloud Satellite to help them drive innovation more rapidly at the edge,” said Paul Savill, SVP Enterprise Product Management and Services at Lumen. “Our enterprise customers can now extend IBM Cloud services across Lumen’s robust global network, enabling them to deploy data-heavy edge applications that demand high security and ultra-low latency. By bringing secure and open hybrid cloud capabilities to the edge, our customers can propel their businesses forward and take advantage of the emerging applications of the 4th Industrial Revolution.”

IBM Cloud Satellite is available immediately. More information can be found on IBM’s website.
