AWS introduces WorkSpaces Thin Client for virtual desktops

AWS is introducing the physical Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client. It should make it easier to access virtual desktop environments.

The computer is intended to access Amazon WorkSpaces, Amazon WorkSpaces Web or Amazon AppStream 2.0. This combined with the identity management and login capabilities of Active Directory.

The thin client is inspired by the Amazon Fire TV Cube for consumers. More specifically, the thin client consists of a cube device directly connected to a monitor, keyboard, mouse and other USB devices. The computer is pre-configured so that it can connect out-of-the-box to any peripheral and is suitable for use with any of AWS’ virtual desktop solutions.

WorkSpaces Thin Client is equipped with secure “secret,” for a reliable connection to one of the administrative virtual desktop services. In addition, the thin client has no internal data storage and cannot host “rogue” applications that try to siphon off data. This helps when employees switch from a thin client to employer-provided laptops.

Use cases

Possible use cases for these thin clients include call centers, employees performing special tasks or in training centers. Other possibilities according to AWS include temporary access to virtual desktop environments. Think about registration environments at large events or in disaster response during major incidents.

The Amazon Thin Client is available now through the B2B marketplace Amazon Business and costs $195.
