Veeam is getting into Software as a Service with a backup service for Microsoft 365 and Azure.

The backup vendor has long partnered with Microsoft to protect Azure workloads. Now, it is expanding by making the Veeam Data Cloud available. Building this backup service on top of the Microsoft cloud should become the ideal environment for protecting Microsoft 365 and Azure data.

“The architecture is built on Zero Trust principles and leverages Azure Blob Storage isolated from production environments, is continuously versioned and maintained, and keeps backups safe, secure, and ready for fast recovery,” Veeam said. The company sees offering a product that includes the software, infrastructure and storage all-in-one as a major benefit of its new backup offering.

Protect Microsoft 365 and Azure

The SaaS service brings together two existing Veeam solutions. First, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, with which the company has been active for years. With the Data Cloud, this product is offered as a service, making it easier to purchase from the cloud. It allows infrastructure administrators to arrange data protection and recovery for Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business and Teams. The role of the cloud also means that the storage of Microsoft data is now essentially unlimited.

The second part of the Veeam Data Cloud focuses on protecting Microsoft Azure. This fully hosted and configured backup service should help protect and restore Azure VMs, Azure SQL and Azure Files. As a SaaS service, deployment should be faster and easier. Also, using the cloud means that more FinOps discipline can be followed, as consumption is more insightful and thus, any cost reduction for backups can occur.
