Qualcomm Technologies launched processors and platforms for the Internet of Things devices across multiple industries that include retail, healthcare, logistics, and transportation. The addition of 5G networks in enterprise networking has allowed companies like Qualcomm to better gain a foothold for IoT and digital transformation implementations.

Qualcomm is launching platforms that are built for edge computing and running AI workloads in close proximity to the data. The platforms for next-gen IoT devices are Qualcomm QCS2290/ QCM2290, Qualcomm QCS4290/ QCM4290, Qualcomm QCS6490/ QCM6490, and Qualcomm QCS8250.

The new platforms

The IoT platforms are used with the Qualcomm 315 5G IoT modem. These are the Qualcomm IoT platforms that support 5G and Wi-Fi 6:

  • Qualcomm QC8250 – This one is aimed at the healthcare industry, digital signage uses, retail, and video collaboration. The platform also comes with Kryo 585 CPU architecture and Qualcomm’s AI Engine as well as an image signal processor to support up to 7 cameras concurrently, with capabilities to encode video in 4K.
  • Qualcomm QCS6490/QCM6490 – This one can be used in the healthcare industry, retail, warehousing, logistics management, and transportation. The platform comes with support for 5G mmWave/Sub-6 GHz and Wi-Fi 6E.
  • Qualcomm QCS4290/QCM4290 – This mid-tier platform comes with Kryo260 CPU architecture and LTE Cat13 and Wi-Fi 6-Ready connectivity. The design is well-suited for industrial handhelds, security panels, and cameras.
  • Qualcomm QCS2290/QCM2290 – This one is designed for industrial handhelds, retail, tracking, and camera applications. As an entry-level platform, it comes with LT connectivity and features Cortex A53 CPU architecture.

The Qualcomm QCS2290/QCM2290, Qualcomm QCS4290/QCM4290, and Qualcomm QCS8250 are all available now. The Qualcomm QCS6490/QCM6490 will not be available until later in the second half of this year.

With these enhanced features, the customers can leverage the fast speeds presented by the introduction of 5G to make the most of the infrastructure available to them.
