AMD announces that its proposed acquisition of Xilinx will be finalized on February 14. Every necessary authority and regulator has greenlit the acquisition.

Now that the acquisition is definitive, AMD stands to gain a specialist in the field of FPGAs and ASICs. Xilinx’ processors are mainly used in industrial applications, but also form part of data center infrastructures.

Expansion

The acquisition of Xilinx helps AMD expand into new markets. AMD gains access to a range of processor types that it does not currently manufacture.

Competition with Intel

Furthermore, the acquisition gives AMD more opportunities to compete with Intel. Intel has been making FPGAs for some time through the acquisition of Altera. Xilinx allows AMD to compete more effectively.
