SK Hynix is considering the acquisition of Arm. “We are reviewing the possibility of forming a consortium to jointly acquire it.”

“I want to buy Arm, entirely or not”, said CEO Park Jung-ho during an annual shareholder meeting. “It doesn’t have to be a majority of shares to be able to control the company.”

According to SK Hynix, the plan is little more than a concept. Still, Park Jung-ho’s words carry weight. The CEO is openly showing interest. In doing so, SK Hynix sends a message to any other party eyeing an acquisition.

Nvidia, Intel and SK Hynix

In 2020, SoftBank — who owns Arm — pledged Arm to Nvidia for $40 billion. International regulators disapproved of the deal. The acquisition has been off the table since February 2022.

In the same month, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger announced that Intel was considering an acquisition. SoftBank simultaneously made moves to take Arm public. Last week, the plan came to light. SoftBank expects the IPO to raise $60 billion.

Preparations are underway, but Arm could go either way. A private buyer remains a possibility, including SK Hynix.
