Windows 11 gets support for USB4 2.0 standard

Windows 11 gets support for the latest USB4 2.0 standard, which enables (transfer) speeds of up to 80 Gbps. This is evident from the latest Windows 11 Dev Channel build 23615.

The USB4 specification saw the light of day in 2019 but has now been optimized to version USB4 2.0. Although the first version of the fourth generation of the USB protocol is already supported in Windows 11, starting with version 21H2, the latest version, USB4 2.0, is supported in the operating system.

This is probably because only the first (consumer) devices with this latest USB protocol appear on the market. USB4 2.0 enables data rates of 80 and 120 Gbps via the now almost standard Type-C connector.

USB4 2.0 hardware-specific though

However, users wishing to use USB4 2.0 technology within Windows 11 must have hardware with significant performance. The technology will initially be supported for laptops with the new Intel 14th generation HX series of mobile processors, such as the recent Razer Blade 18.

Auto-boot Copilot

Other functionality in the latest Windows 11 Dev Channel build 23615 includes automatically opening Microsoft Copilot at startup. The tech giant is experimenting with this for multi-monitor devices with a screen of 27 inches or larger and a minimum width of 1920 pixels. This “auto-start” of Copilot can be turned on or off via the Settings app in Windows 11.
