AI agents no longer need to enter a password to access personal accounts thanks to the new 1Password for Agents. Agents from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and SpaceXSI, among others, can now access accounts this way. This method makes it less likely that users will take the insecure route of having agents enter their passwords.
For virtually all agent tasks, agents need to log in somewhere, whether it’s planning a trip or updating data in a CRM. Until now, the most obvious approach was to simply paste the password into the chat window. This results in a copy of the password ending up outside the owner’s control, with all the associated risks.
1Password aims to prevent that risk. According to CPO Aashish Tripathi, agents will “do real work on our behalf.” In his view, an agent performing a specific task has no reason to retain permanent access to an entire account.
Approval on your own device
Under the new setup, the password never reaches the agent. A unique digital key identifies the agent to 1Password as soon as they arrive at a login page. The user then sees a prompt: which account does the agent want to use, and for what purpose? Only after approval does 1Password automatically fill in the password on the page.
1Password has supported agents in its own systems in several ways. For example, it launched Unified Access Pro, which manages credentials and permissions for people, machine identities, and AI agents with just-in-time access. Following the acquisition of Apono, 1Password can also link an agent’s permissions to the person who delegated the task.
Major players are on board
OpenAI integrates ChatGPT Work and the recently introduced Dots agents with 1Password. Meta’s Muse retrieves logins as soon as the integration is enabled. SpaceXSI’s Grok Bot also offers support.
Claude has been working with 1Password in the browser since July. Claude Duet, the agent released on Wednesday, will be added soon. According to Anthropic CPO Ami Vora, 1Password will “soon” fill in those login attempts with existing passwords. Nine other companies are also building their own integrations.
