Apple introduces the new battery health management feature in macOS Catalina 10.15.5. The feature is designed to extend the life of the battery of a MacBook.

Battery health management is a new feature designed to extend battery life. When enabled, Apple will reduce the maximum battery charge capacity. Completely draining and charging the battery reduces its lifespan. The new feature prevents the battery from fully charging by analysing the device’s charging pattern and temperature.

While the new feature reduces the amount of time you can spend on a single MacBook charge, it does extend the life of the laptop itself. Battery health management is especially useful for people who are charging their MacBook all day long. This feature only works for models with Thunderbolt 3 ports, such as MacBook Pro released in 2016 and later and MacBook Air released in 2018. The feature was previously announced in the developer preview.

The feature is part of the latest macOS Catalina update. The feature will be activated automatically after this update. People who are on the road, or need to work somewhere where there are no power outlets, can experiment with turning it off to get as much battery as possible out of the MacBook. You can do that by going to System Preferences, clicking on Energy Saver, and selecting Battery Health. You can disable the feature here. Energy Saver also displays the current battery condition and notifies you when the battery needs to be repaired or maintained.
