Apple announces the availability of the new 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro models. The devices are available starting October 26, include updated versions of Apple’s M1 processors and reintroduce an HDMI port and SD slot.

The 14″ variant can be equipped with two versions of Apple’s new M1 Pro processor. The 16″ variant will be available with both the M1 Pro and M1 Max. According to Apple, the chips offer ten times more power than Intel processor MacBooks from the most recent generation, available since late 2020.

For that power, you pay handsomely. The most competitively priced 14″ variant costs 2,249 euros. The 16″ variant ranges from 2,749 euros to 3,849 euros. Although speculative, Geekbench’s benchmark of the M1 Max promises double the power of the earlier M1 chip in 13″ MacBook Pros. Time will tell if the new models live up to their price.

Ports

Remarkably, Apple is stepping away from the sole USB-C connector that provided all the connectivity for MacBooks in recent years. The new 14″ and 16″ have three USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, one HDMI port and one SD slot. The Touch Bar is gone, and the magnetic charger makes a comeback.
