How do you prepare your infrastructure for the future of DevOps and IT? Keeping up with the speed of technical developments is more difficult than ever. The roadmaps of five years – with which could be worked for years – were replaced by versions of three years. But they are no longer usable. Speed is the new standard and organizations have to react quickly, when it comes to new services and revenue streams. Otherwise, the competition will be ahead of them. Ultimately, it’s about creating a new operational model.

Organizations must start thinking differently about their infrastructures and remove the divisions that exist between developers and business operations. This means that DevOps is more than just a thing, a person or a product. It is a process and a type of business culture. It is also not a future, but the here and now. Organizations that embrace DevOps must learn new roles, reformulate their expectations and set a new pace.

A common misconception is that this new approach is only interesting for very large companies and very large IT service providers. But we can assume that every company and every organization will have to deal with new technological developments that all have an impact on what they do and how they do it. Think of the internet of things of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Blockchain is also becoming more and more popular. All these developments are going to influence companies of all sizes.

How do you balance your business after migration to the cloud?

Several companies had previously switched quickly to the cloud, but are now discovering that the cloud does not fit in well with their legacy applications. These applications do not work correctly and are forced to return to an on-premise environment.

In addition, infrastructure teams are becoming smaller, while application teams are becoming larger. In this context, companies must invest in the development of microservices around their legacy applications. It is also necessary to develop a forward-looking mindset. Gaining insight into the new DevOps landscape is a good first step, but it is also important to respond quickly. This means investing in a future-proof DevOps culture by working on a hybrid-multi-cloud approach. DevOps is a process of continuous improvement.

Provide a hybrid multi-client experience

In the current era of services and microservices, organisations are struggling with the question of how they can benefit from these innovations. On the one hand, they want to use hyper scalers, but they also want to use their own services that they have built for their own data centres. This is possible with a hybrid multi-customer approach.

Such an approach, based on the NetApp Data Fabric and NetApp Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure (HCI), enables organizations to offer an experience with frictionless use, self-service, automation, programmable APIs and infrastructure independence. In addition, it enables the use of hybrid cloud services between traditional and new applications in, and between data centers and public clouds. So it’s not either-or but and-and. In this way, an organization can use all available technologies and combine innovation with legacy.
