Google One is also making the VPN service available to every user. Previously, the VPN service was only accessible to those with the 2-terabyte Platinum Google One plan or above.

In addition to VPN, Google is introducing a “dark web report” feature in the U.S. to help users protect their personal information that might be exposed on the dark web. Google One is a cloud storage service that offers additional storage for users to use across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

It comes with 100 gigabytes of storage at its base level, as opposed to the standard 15 gigabytes offered for free with every Google account. Users have the option to purchase additional storage as required.

From storage to security

After focusing on storage, Google is now focusing on adding layers of security to the service. VPN by Google One is designed to provide increased protection for users when accessing the internet, regardless of the apps or browsers they are using. The service shields internet sessions from hackers or network operators by masking IP addresses, making it impossible for websites and apps to track user activity or determine their location.

The new dark web report feature offered by Google monitors the hidden web for stolen information and alerts users if their details are exposed. For example, if a user’s personal information, such as their name, address, email, phone number, or Social Security number, is found on the dark web. In that case, the service will guide you on how to protect that information.

The dark web report also shows related information that may be found in those data breaches, and the information in the monitoring profile can be deleted at any time.

In addition to the enhanced security features, Google One plans have expanded cloud storage, editing features like Magic Eraser in Google Photos, access to expert support, and other benefits across Google.

VPN access is rolling out to all Google One members starting today and will be available to users in 22 countries across Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac devices in the coming weeks.

The dark web report feature will also be available to members across all Google One plans in the U.S. over the next few weeks.
