Google will soon offer generative AI functionality in Google Search, the tech giant says. However, the functionality is not yet available in the European Union.

With the introduction of standard built-in generative AI functionality in its search engine, Google aims to help users gather answers from different sources and types of content. Examples include articles, videos and photos. In doing so, the idea is to extract knowledge and have the generative AI functionality summarize this information.

As it happens, the generative AI functionality will not be used in every search, Google senior director of product management Lou Wang indicated. “The goal is not to replace the existing function of snippets. Those snippets answer simple questions,” he stated, suggesting they’re here to stay to serve that function. As mentioned above, generative AI is only used for in-depth answers.

Limitations later rollout in EU

Exactly which AI model Google will use for the generative AI functionality in the search engine is not known. In addition, the functionality also has limitations. Currently, it only works in English and only in the US.

Furthermore, the tech giant announced that the rollout to “certain regions,” such as the European Union, will not take place for the moment. This is because of the laws and regulations that apply there. Also, the generative AI tool Bard, when introduced last year, was not available in our region until later. In the U.S., however, the functionality is now available to everyone.

Introduction Circle to search feature

In addition to announcing the integration of generative AI into Google Search, Google also showed off another new feature. ‘Circle to search’ allows users to long press the Home button of a (mobile) device or gesture navigation. This new feature was one of the prominent unveilings at the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy S24 line this week. Google’s own Pixel 8 will also be equipped with this innovation.

They can then circle text or objects on the screen. This thus becomes part of a search query, which can include text in addition to the cut-out image.
