Microsoft Edge overtakes Firefox in user percentage

For the first time since the introduction of Microsoft Edge, the browser’s popularity has passed Mozilla Firefox by. The number of users of Microsoft’s browser increased just enough in March to end up higher than the declining percentage of Firefox users.

At the top of the list of most used browsers in March was still Google Chrome. With a market share of almost seventy percent, Google‘s browser has no direct competitor when it comes to popularity. Behind it, Edge took over from Firefox for the first time, with the latter again seeing a decrease in the number of active users. A month earlier, it still managed to have a market share of over 7.5 percent, but in March that dropped to just over seven percent. Edge took advantage of this and increased to 7.59 percent.

Although Microsoft Edge comes standard with Windows 10, the increase in the number of users compared to Firefox (and the decrease in the market share of Mozilla’s browser) is also partly due to the recent updates that Microsoft has implemented. The use of the Chromium engine apparently roused the interest of users.

Not only does Edge manage to attract users of Mozilla Firefox, it also takes a small part of Internet Explorer users month after month. At the beginning of 2018 Edge’s predecessor was still second behind Chrome when it came to market share, at the end of that year Firefox already took over. A year later (late 2019) Edge also ignored Microsoft’s now antique browser, after which Explorer saw a considerable drop in user numbers month after month.
