Trello is planning to integrate its no-code automation tool Butler into Slack and Jira. The company’s plan is to eventually have external developers build their own integrations with Butler, with the goal of making Trello the command center for all work-related matters.
With Butler, users can automate operations in Trello with rule-based triggers, with a single mouse click or via scheduled commands based on regular time periods or expiration dates. Through the integration with Butler, users can now create an automated workflow that includes actions in the popular communication app Slack and the project management tool Jira.
When using Jira, teams can set up automatic triggers to send tickets to developers. For example, a marketing team can notify their engineering team when they are ready to work on updates for the website. Trello-CEO Michael Pryor told ZDNet that they had a lot of customers using both Jira and Trello. They want to use the tool of their choice and the tools work together easily.
For example, a sales team that uses Trello as a Content Relationship Management System can regularly draw up contracts that need to be reviewed by the company’s legal team. If such a contract is added to Trello, they can use Butler to send an automatic message to the channel of the legal team in Slack. Pryor says they have already partially started integrating Slack because they ‘already use the application internally’.
Future plans
Trello has plans to add more Butler integrations in the future with tools that fall into three categories: Communication (think of Slack or Microsoft Teams), Project Tracking (Jira) and shared document services (Dropbox, Google Docs or Confluence). These integrations are the first step in Trello’s long-term vision to let external developers connect their own tools to Butler. According to Pryor, this offers ‘infinite possibilities’ for automating workflow between Trello and other products.
Trello acquired Butler in 2018 after the product proved to be one of the most popular automation integrations.
