Apple released new versions for all of its operating systems, including macOS, iOS/iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS, to the public today. Not only do these upgrades offer bug fixes and security improvements, but they also include new features in all platforms.

The iOS and iPad updates (iOS and iPadOS 15.4) are, as usual, the most significant in terms of the number and scope of modifications. Universal Control support for the iPad and the option to utilize Face ID while wearing a protective face mask are likely the two most important new features. Face ID with a mask requires users to opt-in via settings.

Last week, Apple introduced some new devices, one of which is the all-new Mac Studio.

Contactless payments and new emoji

Universal control, which enables users to control both a Mac and an iPad with ease using the same input device, requires an iPad and Mac with the latest software updates.

As previously reported, iOS 15.4 enables iPhones to accept contactless payments through NFC without the need for any extra hardware, enhancing the phone’s use as a point-of-sale device.

There is also a slew of new emoji, and when saving vaccination data in Wallet, the EU Digital COVID Certificate format is now supported.

Universal control is here too

On the Mac, macOS Monterey 12.3 introduces Universal Control and new emoji to the mix. It also includes support for dynamic head-tracking Spatial Audio in the Music app for M1 Macs, which works with supported AirPods headphones.

A new American English Siri voice option has been added to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, and support for Italian and Chinese (Traditional) in Safari’s built-in web page translator, among countless other adjustments and updates.

watchOS and tvOS updates may be smaller in scope, but they also have their share of features. watchOS, for instance, has support for the EU Digital COVID Certificate.
