xAI has announced an early beta version of Grok Build, a new AI tool for software development that works directly from the terminal. Elon Musk’s company (photo) positions the software as an agentic CLI, allowing developers not only to generate code but also to execute complete programming and automation tasks via natural language.
For now, the new tool is only available to users of the SuperGrok Heavy subscription. According to Engadget, that subscription costs $300 per month, indicating that xAI is initially targeting professional developers and power users.
AI agent for developers
With Grok Build, xAI is making a strong push into the realm of AI-assisted software development, an area where companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are also heavily investing. The software runs locally in a command-line interface and, according to xAI, can independently execute multiple steps within development workflows.
The tool supports, among other things, parallel-working subagents, which allow different programming tasks to be executed simultaneously. Additionally, xAI mentions integration with worktrees, shell commands, and Visual Studio Code. This would enable developers to break down larger software projects into separate AI-driven tasks.
According to the announcement, Grok Build can assist with setting up applications, modifying files, and automating development workflows, among other things. It uses natural language as an interface for complex programming tasks.
Focus on agentic AI
The introduction of Grok Build fits within the broader shift toward so-called agentic AI. In this context, AI systems no longer function solely as chatbots or code assistants, but perform actions independently within software environments.
xAI links Grok Build to Grok 4.3, the latest version of its AI model. According to the company, this model offers extensive capabilities for tool usage, reasoning, and long-term context processing. xAI cites a context window of up to 1 million tokens.
According to Engadget, Elon Musk previously acknowledged that xAI lags behind competitors like Anthropic in the field of AI-assisted programming. The launch of Grok Build appears to be part of a broader effort to close that gap. The publication references earlier statements by Musk in which he indicated that he was rebuilding xAI “from the ground up.”
Competition in AI development is intensifying
The market for AI-driven programming tools is evolving rapidly. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are all investing in systems capable of independently writing, testing, and executing code. xAI is attempting to differentiate itself with a terminal-based approach strongly focused on developers.
The availability of Grok Build remains limited for now. xAI refers to it as an “early beta” and has not yet announced a general release date.
