On Sunday, Feb. 18, around 7:30 PM, AMS-IX registered a traffic spike of 12 Terabits per second of data. Never before has the Internet node processed so much data.

The internet exchange sees an explanation for the new record. For example, Sunday evening is a typical time when Dutch people spend their time indoors using internet services, especially during winter. During winter evenings, many Dutch people seem to engage in indoor activities that require internet.

To put the peak of 12 Tbit/s into perspective, it corresponds to 100 million people simultaneously playing the video game Fortnite or 6.4 million people watching TikTok videos.

Growth

There is also a technical explanation for the new record. AMS-IX has recently expanded. Many networks have upgraded their internet capacity to facilitate the exchange of larger traffic volumes. AMS-IX also added the first 400G customer ports to its peering platform to continue to provide sufficient port capacity. By 2023, the platform saw a 15 per cent increase in 100G ports and a 12 per cent increase in 10G ports.

The old record was recorded Oct. 16, 2022. That’s when the internet exchange processed 11.1 Terabits per second of data.
