The new version of the container platform includes new features for AWS Outposts and -Wavelength.

Red Hat announced this during Kubecon + CloudNativeCon Europe. The platform is based on Kubernetes 1.28, which has been available since August 2023. In particular, Red Hat OpenShift 4.15 has new features to improve edge, core and virtualization further.

Edge applications

For edge computing, it is now possible to use Red Hat OpenShift on AWS Outposts. Administrators can, therefore, install Red Hat OpenShift clusters on AWS. Outposts allow enterprises to run AWS services at edge locations, allowing latency-sensitive applications to run at the location that makes the most sense.

Also, Red Hat OpenShift 4.15 introduces a new integration with AWS Wavelength. This infrastructure is optimized for edge applications. For this purpose, AWS compute and storage services are plugged into a service provider’s data centres at the edge of the 5G network. In version 4.15, it is possible to deploy Red Hat OpenShift in AWS, with compute nodes in AWS Wavelength Zones.

The core and virtualization

In addition to the edge-focused innovations, Red Hat is coming out with OVN IPsec support for remote vendors. The support should help encrypt data in motion, sometimes subject to strict legislation. “This has posed a challenge for how Red Hat OpenShift accesses storage from appliances, such as a storage appliance that uses NFS and iSCSI. To that end, we’ve enhanced OVN Kubernetes’ existing intracluster IPsec capability to also support encrypting traffic between Red Hat OpenShift and an IPsec-configured external provider,” Red Hat said.

Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization gets new resilience and disaster recovery capabilities to support virtualisation further. For example, protecting VM workloads with the Metro-DR solution for Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation is now possible. In addition, the virtualization tool now features network hot plugging, which can be used to reconfigure interface cards dynamically.

During Kubecon + CloudNativeCon Europe, Red Hat made several announcements about other products. Below is a summary of the highlights:

  • Quay 3.11 is generally available, with a particular focus on permission management, image lifecycle automation and an AWS integration.
  • Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security 4.4 is now generally available. The new release comes with stronger consistency for scan results, upgraded security posture management and more secuirty automation.
