AMD and Anthropic are entering into a strategic partnership. Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in Helios racks, with the first gigawatt coming online in the first half of 2027. In addition, AMD will invest up to $5 billion in the creator of Claude.
The deal involves more than just hardware. Anthropic will deploy AMD Helios rack-scale solutions featuring Instinct MI455X GPUs, EPYC Venice processors, Pensando networking, and ROCm software. This expands AMD’s commitment to Anthropic, which was already using Instinct MI355X GPUs.
AMD and Anthropic are also launching a multi-year collaboration in which Claude will be used to optimize workloads for Instinct GPUs and accelerate the development of ROCm. This is familiar territory for Anthropic. The company targets a wide range of processors, from Google to Nvidia and AMD, with the added benefit of never being fully dependent on any one of these hardware providers.
Part of a larger GPU expansion
With the Instinct MI450 and the Helios platform, AMD offers a viable inference option, although training runs are mostly conducted on Nvidia and Google. Earlier this year, Meta announced it would deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, while Oracle is deploying approximately 50,000 MI450 chips. This week, Microsoft also announced that Azure will use Helios racks for large-scale inference.
A Helios rack contains 72 MI455X GPUs, delivering approximately 2.9 exaFLOPS of FP4 computing power and 31 TB of HBM4 memory. This gives AMD a direct alternative to Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform.
What stands out about the Anthropic deal is that, just like with the Meta deal, it involves a complex financial structure. AMD is also committing to an investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic.
Compute as the key
According to co-founder and Chief Compute Officer Tom Brown, running on a variety of hardware allows the right workloads to be matched to the right chips. The rollout of the first gigawatt will begin in the first half of 2027.
