IBM develops mainframe chip that also runs Arm code

IBM has unveiled the first mainframe processor with a dual architecture. Each core will eventually execute both Arm and IBM Z or LinuxONE instructions. The chip will be featured in future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems and is the first tangible result of the collaboration with Arm announced in April.

The company emphasizes that there are no separate Arm cores alongside IBM cores, but rather a single core type that natively executes both architectures. This will allow organizations to run Arm-native Linux environments alongside z/OS and Linux on IBM Z on the same machine.

The chip is manufactured on a 2-nanometer node and features eleven high-performance cores clocking above 5.7 GHz. It also includes AI inference accelerators for fraud detection during transactions, a dedicated on-chip data processing unit for I/O acceleration, and a robust cache architecture. According to IBM, IBM Z and LinuxONE scale to hundreds of cores and tens of terabytes of memory.

The offering is therefore primarily a software story. The Arm ecosystem includes more than 22 million developers, from the cloud to the edge, and these applications are now within reach of platforms that traditionally focus on transaction processing. Arm workloads benefit from encryption, secure key management, and hardware-based error detection and recovery.

Follow-up to the April deal

The announcement marks the first processor milestone resulting from the collaboration that IBM and Arm entered into in April 2026. According to IBM, this collaboration focuses on three areas: virtualization tools, alignment around security and data residency, and shared technology layers for enterprise software portability.

“This processor represents a significant architectural advancement for IBM Z and LinuxONE,” said Christian Jacobi, CTO and IBM Fellow at IBM Systems Development. “By bringing Arm natively to our platform, we’re combining access to one of the industry’s fastest-growing software ecosystems with the qualities that have made IBM systems the foundation for how businesses run today.”
