Google DeepMind and Google Cloud are granting up to 200 European scientists direct access to their cutting-edge models, including AlphaFold 3 and WeatherNext. The group will collectively receive $3 million in compute credits to use. The program is being run through the European initiative RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe).
In addition to the models, researchers will also receive computing power via Google Cloud, Reuters reports. According to Google’s announcement, these tools will enable researchers to achieve scientific breakthroughs more quickly.
The package consists of five scientific tools. First is AlphaFold 3, which predicts the structures and interactions of proteins and other biomolecules. WeatherNext focuses on AI-driven weather forecasts, while AlphaGenome analyzes how DNA variations influence biological processes and diseases. In addition, there are AlphaEvolve, an AI agent that designs and improves algorithms, and AlphaEarth Foundations. The latter model maps changes on Earth, including through satellite data.
European virtual institute
The European Commission established RAISE as a virtual research institute designed to pool computing power, data, AI talent, and funding. The initiative launched in November 2025. The pilot phase is funded with approximately 107 million euros from Horizon Europe. A total of 600 million euros has been allocated for access to AI gigafactories and EuroHPC supercomputers.
How the selection process for the Google initiative will work, when access will begin, and how the credits will be allocated are not yet known.
Science as a priority
AlphaFold is DeepMind’s best-known scientific product; it was also what former DeepMind CEO and chairman Demis Hassabis said he was most proud of. With AlphaFold 3, the system predicts, among other things, interactions between proteins, DNA, RNA, and small molecules. This is necessary for identifying natural processes that can be harnessed for medical purposes. DeepMind itself was acquired by Google in 2014 and merged with Google Brain in 2023 to form Google DeepMind.
