Drive for desktop has replaced Drive File Stream, Sync, and Backup to provide all their popular features in one app to facilitate users.
Drive for desktop is Google’s latest attempt at making it easier for their users to use their famous features.
Google offered two syncing services for files: Sync and Backup, specifically for consumers. Drive File Stream was developed mainly for business users. Google has now unified the solutions to create a singular app called Drive for desktop.
The aim is to provide users with a centralized experience and fulfill their needs for greater functionality.
How does it work?
Google explained in a blog how the new Drive desktop app would be automatically syncing local files to the cloud on either Google Drive or with Google Photos. It also syncs external storage devices such as external hard drives and flash drives to the cloud while mirroring Drive files to desktops.
Release details
Drive for desktop has already started rolling out. Users of Drive File Stream have access to the new app.
For those using Sync and Backup, Google has said they will start getting notifications in the next few months to update their system to Drive. MacOS and Windows devices will also have their versions of Drive for desktop available very soon.
Other announcements
Google had some more news to offer. For starters, they support several brand logos, including Yahoo, Mailchimp, AOL, Twilio SendGrid, and Fastmail, due to an agreement between AuthIndicators Working Group and Google. This created BIMI, the Brand Indicators for Message Identification.
Yahoo users can already use BIMI, but now Gmail users will be able to try them too. However, BIMI will not be available to over two billion inboxes. In addition, organizations need to pass DMARC authentication checks for their logos to appear.
