In December the curtain falls on Windows 10 Mobile

The situation was already pretty good: in December of this year, Microsoft officially stopped supporting Windows 10 Mobile. Although the company hasn’t added any new features since 2017, the operating system was still provided with security updates. But that time also comes to an end.

In a FAQ on its support site, Microsoft writes that the support will soon stop:

As of December 10, 2019, Windows 10 Mobile users will no longer receive free new security updates, non-security patches, free personal support options, or updates to online technical content from Microsoft.

This means that support for the mobile operating system will come to an end in December. After that, it will still be possible to back up device settings, apps, and more for three months. From 10 March 2020, this possibility will also come to an end. For the next twelve months, users can still upload their photos and restore their device from a backup. When that time is up, the curtain really falls on Windows 10 Mobile. Microsoft advises customers to switch to an Android or iOS device.

Ambitious under

Microsoft’s mobile strategy was rather ambitious. The company brought Windows to mobile devices, but did not dent the market share of its two major competitors in this area: Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. In July 2017, the company stopped supporting Windows Phone 8.1, and in the following period Microsoft’s mobile strategy was redesigned.

For example, it had stopped making its own smartphones via Nokia (which was resold to HMD Global). In addition, Microsoft is now focusing on bringing its own apps to the rival operating systems. Above all, that seems to be the new future for Microsoft. In the meantime, the company seems to be breeding on a new mobile product, but only wants to come up with it if it really has a big impact on the market.
