Anthropic has publicly confirmed for the first time that it is setting up an in-house team to design its own AI chips for Claude. The company is seeking experienced engineers, but will continue to rely on hardware from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD. Demand for its models continues to grow significantly.
A spokesperson confirmed the plans to Business Insider. According to the spokesperson, Anthropic aims to co-design hardware and models so that Claude runs faster and more efficiently at the scale users require. However, there will be no immediate changes to the existing approach. The company will continue to use a “multi-chip approach,” with hardware from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD remaining central.
The recently posted job listing refers to a “custom silicon team.” Anthropic is seeking engineers with broad expertise in chip design and verification. The salary ranges from $320,000 to $485,000. Candidates must have a proven track record of contributing to the completion and delivery of semiconductor designs.
“This is a role for someone who has shipped silicon, has a realistic relationship with schedules, and is comfortable making consequential calls without a large organization behind them,” the job posting states.
Designing an AI chip in-house helps companies reduce their dependence on Nvidia. It also allows AI labs to better tailor their computing power to their models.
Pursuing multiple paths simultaneously
Reuters previously reported that Anthropic was exploring developing its own chips. The Information reported last month that the company was in talks with Samsung as a potential manufacturing partner.
In addition, through a long-term agreement with Google and Broadcom, Anthropic will have access to approximately 3.5 gigawatts of custom TPU capacity starting in 2027. Full independence from Nvidia is not on the table for the time being. For now, the in-house silicon team serves as an additional track alongside existing suppliers.
