The monthly Patch Tuesday update for Windows is causing problems for end users with Windows 11 22H2 and -23H2 systems. This reports Microsoft in its Windows release health dashboard.

According to the tech giant, users with Windows 11 version 22H2 or 23H2 may experience problems when installing the latest Patch Tuesday update. During the installation process, they get a “0x800F0922 error”, and the update stops downloading at 96 percent.

More specifically, these users get a 0x800F0922 error code in the Windows Event viewer and the message “Something didn’t go as planned. Don’t worry: changes will be undone. Please keep your computer on.”

Workaround available

Microsoft says it is working on a fix and is providing a temporary workaround. End users of Windows 11 are urged to delete the so-called ‘C:³$WinREAgent’ hidden folder. After this, they must reboot their system to install the February 2024 updates correctly.

Experts conclude from the proposed workaround that the cause may lie in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This Windows feature already caused the same problems in Windows 10 with the January update.

Push to Windows 11 23H2

The update issues surrounding Windows 11 22H2 and especially 23H2 are noteworthy now that Microsoft recently started pushing Windows 11 23H2 to end users again. This is done because, among other things, the lifespan of Windows 11 22H1 is ending, and the same will occur for 22H2 at the end of this year.
