Google is said to pay publishers $10,000 a month to feature articles created with an unknown AI tool from the company.

Google, Adweek writes, is said to have recently reached an agreement with a number of independent publishers. This will give these publishers access to an as-yet-unknown AI tool that is still in a beta phase for 12 months. This is possibly done under the Google News Initiative, which was launched in 2018.

Conditions for publishers

Within the agreement, publishers will publish a predetermined volume of AI-generated articles on their own platforms.

Under the terms of the agreement, publishers are required to publish a predetermined quantity of AI-generated articles on their respective platforms. To do so, they need to furnish Google with a list of external websites known for regularly supplying news and reports relevant to their target audience. Through a dashboard interface, they can receive AI-generated summaries of posts or articles from these websites, which can then be reviewed by a human editor or published directly. Google does not mandate these articles to be labeled as AI-generated content.

Publishers are expected to publish three AI-generated articles daily, send out a weekly newsletter, and execute a monthly marketing campaign as per Google’s directives. Additionally, they are to provide Google with analytics and feedback on these AI-generated articles and reports.

$10,000 per month and tooling

In exchange for posting the AI content, the various publishers receive a monthly stipend of $10,000.

In return for featuring AI content, participating publishers are compensated with a monthly stipend of $10,000. In some instances, they may also gain complimentary access to the tools utilized for creating these AI-generated articles. These tools aid publishers in streamlining content enrichment by, for instance, indexing recent reports from various entities like governments or other news organizations, summarizing them, and presenting them as new articles.

The specific AI tool or model provided by Google to publishers remains undisclosed. Speculations suggest it might be the previously announced “Genesis tool” by Google, which is described as a personalized AI assistant for journalists capable of generating content.

Google confirms cooperation

Google has confirmed its collaboration with smaller publishers in a statement to Adweek. It’s reported that the two parties are exploring ways in which AI tools could assist journalists in their tasks.

Google has clarified that the notion that these tools would primarily be used for repurposing others’ work is false. Instead, the focus is on aiding journalists from smaller publications in producing factual content sourced from public outlets like government or health organizations.

Finally, Google explicitly states that these tools cannot replace the important role journalists play in reporting and creating and fact-checking their articles.
