Google Calendar now allows users to specify more precisely where a worker is located on a given day. Previously, the option existed to schedule a work day by default for home or office work, for example.

The feature can be helpful in a team to coordinate when someone is in the office, as it can also be made insightful for other users. The option is accessible for Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, Education Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Nonprofits.

Convenient, but also for control purposes.

This is a minor update, but for colleagues, this knowledge can certainly be useful. However, it is important to mention why Google might start using its feature. A week ago, the leadership of the tech giant’s HR revealed that they will monitor who adheres to the standards of hybrid working. From now on, this information will be used in interim employee reviews. It is certainly conceivable that other organizations will use this new feature for the same purposes.

In any case, more similar noises have been heard from tech companies. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, for example, stated in early May that working remotely could “hurt your career.”
