IGEL has entered into a worldwide agreement with HP. The latter manufacturer will add IGEL OS as an integrated operating system option for a range of thin client PCs.
IGEL develops an operating system based on Linux. In practice, the so-called IGEL OS runs on the endpoints of organizations whose business software is largely delivered from the cloud. Lightweight PCs such as thin clients often account for a significant portion of these endpoints. The computing power of thin clients is explicitly limited to a minimum to achieve cost efficiency. After all, the power required for an application or workload can just as easily be pulled from the cloud. That’s what IGEL OS’ design is all about. The operating system was built to connect endpoints to a cloud environment without placing an unnecessary burden on the endpoints.
Now, IGEL is announcing a partnership with HP. IGEL OS has been certified for three of HP’s thin clients: the t430, t540 and t640. This means that IGEL OS can be supplied as a fixed integration in the thin clients. The option is available immediately from partners and distributors of HP thin clients.
Supply and demand
According to IGEL, the collaboration came about in response to demand from various customers who were already working with HP’s thin clients and IGEL OS. A spokesperson mentions healthcare retailers and banks. IGEL OS certification for the HP t430, t540 and t640 enables said customers to have IGEL OS pre-installed when purchasing a thin client.
