The first release candidate of Linux 6 is available. The open-source operating system now features support for AMD GPUs, Intel Gaudi accelerators and RISC-V.

Some developers refer to the release as 5.20, but Linux guru Linus Torvalds said he doesn’t care what the version is called.

The first release candidate (rc1) of Linux 6 brings little change to the kernel, Torvalds continued. To his regret, the code still lacks infrastructure for programming language Rust and multi-gen LRU VM. Although Torvalds did not indicate why these functionalities are missing, he expects both to be included in future releases.

New functionality

Linux 6 rc1 does bring new functionality. More than half of the updates focus on a so-called AMD GPU register dump. These are specific files for supporting AMD GPUs.

Furthermore, JSON files describing perf events were adapted to support processors. Rc1 also provides new functionality for supporting RISC-V, running Intel Gaudi accelerators and improving ACPI handling.
