HPE is on its third release for GreenLake for Block Storage. It adds a new Alletra MP system that serves mission-critical apps.

Since 2022, HPE has been marketing its HPE GreenLake for Block Storage portfolio through its HPE GreenLake as-a-service program. Since last year, this service has been based on the HPE Alletra Storage MP hardware, and this combined portfolio is the basis for all HPE GreenLake services for block storage and file storage.

Recently, the tech giant introduced the third release of its HPE GreenLake for Block Storage. According to the tech giant, this release is another step in the consolidation, standardization and simplification it is implementing for its block storage portfolio, all based on a common software and hardware stack and with overarching cloud management through HPE GreenLake.

New (block) storage architecture

According to the tech giant, the third release is also a new step in what a (block) storage architecture should look like. The new release changes this architecture from a traditional node pair design to a modular, scale-out and “disaggregated” architecture based on HPE Alletra MP.

The disaggregated architecture has long been a feature of the offering and allows for easy scaling based on your needs. This architecture offers a number of advantages, according to the tech giant. It brings more effective and cost-reducing scaling options in response to growing workload demands.

The innovation does offer more opportunities for better performance and speeds for critical applications with a so-called shared-everything architecture. Furthermore, the new architecture should also run any application without problems with a 100 percent data availability guarantee.

Hardware specifications

The third release offers new 16-core/32-core 2-node and 4-node switched models that should provide up to two times better performance compared to the previous models. Capacity can be increased up to 2.5 times with up to 8 JBOF expansion helves and raw storage capacity of between 13.38 TB and 2.8 PB. In addition, performance and storage capacity can be scaled independently, among other things. A new HPE StoreMore Guarantee additionally guarantees 4:1 data compactness.

On the network side, the new models now offer NVMe/TCP support for existing Fibre Channel, NVMe or/FC and iSCI connectivity options.

Software and added services

On the software front, the now-added HPE Infosight AIops management tool allows users to check the impact of workloads on storage in real-time. Adjustments and optimization to the infrastructure can then be made when needed.

Other additions include AI-based reporting and analytics capabilities for system performance and simplifying individual troubleshooting.
