Another acquisition for human error detection specialist

Code 42’s ‘insider threat’ detection makes Mimecast’s suite more complete

The two companies already had a partnership, but now Mimecast is officially acquiring Code42. The provider of the only recently announced Human Risk Management (HRM) platform thus adds a service to its portfolio focusing specifically on Insider Threats.

Whereas Mimecast’s existing platform is partly about identifying problems caused by human errors –including employees who are more likely to fall victim to malicious actors– Code42’s tool explicitly targets corporate espionage, theft of confidential data and intellectual property, and sabotage attempts by employees.

‘Opening laptop is most critical risk moment’

Code42’s flagship product is Incydr, and it is precisely this product that will be integrated into the Mimecast platform in the near future. Incydr not only actively scans for unwanted comings and goings but also provides services to prevent data exfiltration, leaks, and theft. According to Mimecast, it also helps reduce response time in case malicious actors unexpectedly gain access to critical systems. The acquisition should give customers greater insight into their company’s attack surface, which, after all, is always changing and expanding.

The company boasts of providing an integrated set of monitoring tools for its customers’ ecosystems. Technologies from various partners are already woven into this. “Mimecast’s platform stands out in our crowded industry by focusing specifically on the critical moment of risk—a person opening their laptop,” says Marc van Zadelhoff, CEO since January of this year. By which he means that from that moment on it is important to keep a sharp eye on things to prevent human errors.

Comprehensive solution

Mimecast has designed its HRM platform as a comprehensive solution instead of the patchwork of point solutions that organizations already use. The platform detects human error within organizations. A scoring system shows where the most significant dangers lie in the workforce through a myriad of prevention tools and mitigation steps.

Earlier this year, Mimecast also acquired Elevate Security. That led to the creation of the Human Risk Management platform, which has much of the same functionality, such as identifying risky behaviours. Traditionally, Mimecast offered awareness training and e-mail services and their associated protection. A recurring theme in the suite of products and services though, is reducing human error.
