Fortinet introduces the FortiGate 1200G with FortiSASE Outpost

Fortinet is launching the FortiGate 1200G series, the latest addition to the FortiGate G series, featuring FortiSASE Outpost. The solution delivers cloud-based security services to enterprise-managed environments. This allows organizations to determine where security inspection and enforcement take place.

Fortinet sees the line between firewalls and SASE blurring. While both technologies were long separate worlds, a new market is emerging that Fortinet itself calls a “SASE firewall.” The FortiGate 1200G is the company’s response to this convergence. The appliance combines local enforcement with cloud-delivered security, allowing companies to enforce security where it makes the most business sense: on-premises, at the edge, or in the cloud.

Hardware built for AI traffic

The 1200G series runs on Fortinet’s latest FortiASIC architecture. This accelerates both networking and security processing, aiming to provide predictable, low-latency protection for demanding enterprise and data center environments.

In terms of connectivity, the appliance offers flexible 10G, 25G, and 100G ports. Hardware-rooted protections, secure credential storage, and built-in redundancy are designed to strengthen integrity and continuity. According to Fortinet, this allows organizations to inspect encrypted and AI-driven traffic without compromising application performance.

FortiSASE Outpost at the edge

The most notable feature is FortiSASE Outpost. When you configure the FortiGate as an Outpost, the appliance functions as an ASIC-accelerated on-site SASE point-of-presence (POP). Data-sensitive or latency-critical traffic is then processed locally, closer to users and data, while other traffic can route through a cloud POP.

This allows organizations to keep logs, traffic, and processing within specific geographic or private boundaries. This helps with compliance and sovereignty requirements and reduces bandwidth costs. Management is centralized via the FortiSASE interface, which controls both Fortinet POPs and on-site POPs without treating the latter as a separate security platform.

All components run on FortiOS, enabling FortiGate and FortiSASE to share policies, threat intelligence, and zero-trust decisions. FortiGuard AI-Powered Security Services provide real-time intelligence across both deployment models, while FortiAI is designed to help security teams investigate and respond more quickly.
