The company says their foldables are “Defining the Future of Smartphone Innovation”.

Samsung has indeed been a leader in foldables, but it wasn’t until they released their third-generation devices that the company saw significant success in the market. Lower pricing, improved designs, and features such as S Pen support influenced sales, they claim. And now the tech giant can boast about shipping four times more foldables in 2021 than in 2020.

The huge increase is even more remarkable when one considers that analysts had already predicted a three-fold increase for the company.

With the $1,000 price point of the Z Flip 3, Samsung has seen a 150% increase in consumers who switched smartphone brands for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 when compared to the Galaxy Note 20. The company saw a 140% increase in switching when compared to the Galaxy S21.

“Consumer enthusiasm for Samsung foldables is exemplified by the success of the Galaxy Z series,” Samsung says in their press release. “In the first month since launch, the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 exceeded total accumulative sales of Samsung foldable devices in 2020.”

Samsung explains how they got here

In their news post this week, Samsung admits that while they may have first introduced the concept of foldable displays in 2011, it took over a decade to bring foldable devices to consumers around the world.

The next major milestone came in 2019, they say. That was when Samsung “brought its foldable vision to reality” with the Galaxy Fold, its first foldable device. Soon after that came the Galaxy Z Flip. “A sleek clamshell design – a throwback to flip phones of yore – made the Galaxy Z Flip an instant icon,” they claim.

After a decade of progress and three generations of innovation, the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 brought enhanced durability and an improved user experience to foldables. Not only have they set a new standard in the industry, but they rekindled consumer interest in smartphones in general.
