The AI feature Voice Clarity first available to Microsoft Surface users will soon come to all Windows 11 users. With that, this feature also lands on x86 systems, after being exclusive to ARM-based devices.

The AI feature Voice Clarity provides enhancements to voices during video calls. The tool uses so-called “low-complexity” AI models to suppress background noise, provide echo cancellation and to reduce vibration noise.

This technology was previously available only on Microsoft Surface laptops with ARM processors, such as the Surface Pro 9 5G and Surface Pro X models.

Windows 11 Canary Channel build 26040

With the arrival of Windows 11 Canary Channel build 26040, this technology is now available to all Windows 11 users. This means it no longer matters whether they are using a Windows PC or laptop with an Intel- or AMD-based x86 chip or an ARM processor.

The technology works at the system level with numerous apps, including Teams, Zoom and other popular communication solutions.

Windows Studio Effects component

The Voice Clarity feature is also part of the Windows Studio Effects suite. The tools in this suite use ML algorithms and require dedicated hardware, often in the form of a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Examples include video background effects, eye contact technology, auto framing and voice enhancements.

The now-released Windows 11 build 26040 allows users who do not have an NPU in their systems to try out this technology, indicates the tech giant.
