Veeam has made Data Platform v13.1 generally available. The release adds support for six new hypervisors, brings malware scanning to NAS, and strengthens protection for enterprise applications such as EPIC EHR, DB2, and Oracle. With this release, Veeam is targeting customers facing price pressure from VMware.
With v13.1, Veeam now supports a total of fourteen hypervisors. The six new additions are Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, Sangfor aSV, XCP-ng, Citrix XenServer, VergeIO, and Platform9. According to Veeam, the platform now covers approximately 95% of the most widely used hypervisors.
Veeam explicitly positions this expansion as a response to ongoing VMware price pressure and the resulting modernization initiatives. Through the Universal Hypervisor API, vendors can build their own integrations to prevent vendor lock-in. New platforms are thus protected from day one, with portable recovery across hypervisors without the need for re-platforming.
Protection for enterprise applications
In addition to the hypervisor expansion, v13.1 focuses on heavy enterprise workloads. It introduces purpose-built support for EPIC EHR, DB2 on Windows, and Oracle with incremental merge, supplemented by an Application Backup Repository for custom applications. Organizations in healthcare, financial services, and other sectors can thus consolidate critical workloads onto a single platform and reduce the number of standalone point tools.
On the security front, Veeam is further expanding its threat detection capabilities. Malware scanning now also covers NAS, while cloud threat detection for Azure has been enhanced. Additionally, the company is introducing Active Directory Forest Recovery to accelerate identity recovery after an attack, along with post-quantum cryptography compliant with NIST standards and hybrid FIPS support. Detection prior to restore is designed to ensure that teams restore data only from clean, reliable recovery points.
“Cyber risk is dramatically escalating with rapid advancement in frontier models and self-driving AI agents,” says Rehan Jalil, President of Products and Technology at Veeam. According to him, v13.1 provides customers with stronger application coverage and more comprehensive security and recovery capabilities.
The new version builds on v13, released last year, with additional security and hypervisor options, as well as immutable backups by default. Finally, v13.1 adds NAS enhancements that enable long-term retention directly to AWS S3 Glacier and Azure Archive.
Veeam Data Platform v13.1 is now available. The plug-in for Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization will follow later in Q3.
