The iPhone 16 Pro models could revolutionize mobile photography by including periscope lens technology. In a recent update, Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that both iPhone 16 Pro models will benefit from this innovative feature.

Kuo’s insight suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro will be slightly larger than its predecessors, allowing for increased internal space. This expanded size will enable Apple to introduce the periscope lens to both premium devices for the first time. The inclusion promises improved optical zoom capabilities and enhanced photography experiences.

Apple’s way of rolling out updates

Notably, renowned display industry analyst Ross Young previously shared that Apple plans to introduce new iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max screen sizes. The smaller iPhone 16 Pro will likely sport a 6.3-inch display. Meanwhile, the larger iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a 6.9-inch screen.

This strategic move aligns with Kuo’s earlier predictions, highlighting Apple’s practice of reserving advanced hardware features for their premium models before expanding them to other devices in subsequent years.

Kuo further revealed that Apple’s trusted partner, Cowell, will supply the periscope camera system.

Taking the photography experience to a new level

This innovative technology utilizes an angled mirror to redirect light entering the telephoto lens toward the image sensor. This “folded” telephoto setup allows a more extended zoom range without compromising image quality. This offers users a more immersive photography experience.

While the current iPhone 14 Pro supports up to 3x optical zoom, the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to provide an impressive 5–6x optical zoom range. It remains to be seen if the zoom capabilities will undergo further enhancements in the 2024 Pro and Pro Max models.
