The long-standing partnership between Oracle and Juniper continues with HPE as the owner of the latter. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure relies heavily on HPE Juniper networking for the “gigawatt-scale” expansion of its AI infrastructure. Oracle can also purchase HPE shares at a fixed price as part of the new deal.
Oracle and Juniper have been working together for more than a decade. The new dimension in networking today revolves around large GPU clusters, in this case hosted by OCI. In addition to existing routing and switching, Oracle will use HPE Juniper’s PTX and MX routing in the coming years, alongside QFX and EX switching. In addition, Oracle will receive years of support, and HPE will help optimize network traffic, power, space, and other requirements for large AI environments.
Proactive network
MX and PTX routers are critical for parts of Oracle’s edge network, while QFX switches support the fabric of regional data centers. The latest switches in this platform meet the requirements for a RoCEv2-based AI backend network. Crucially, HPE Juniper networking is ubiquitous, allowing Oracle to rely on consistent, predictable technology when maintaining and upgrading its own network.
Network issues are often the result of a combination of factors. To detect problems such as queue buildup, packet loss, uneven network traffic, and failing components early on, HPE and Oracle are collaborating on intelligent telemetry that takes proactive action. This ensures that as many GPUs as possible remain operational within OCI.
HPE shares at an attractive price
Although the agreement primarily revolves around a continuation of the hardware and software partnership, a financial arrangement has also been included. HPE has issued warrants to Oracle, allowing it to purchase HPE shares at a fixed price. Should HPE’s stock price rise as a result of its continued AI expansion, Oracle can recoup a portion of the substantial costs associated with the AI expansion by selling those shares. The same would, of course, apply to the operation of OCI, which relies on HPE Juniper equipment for high-speed connectivity.
