Intel has announced three manufacturers that will incorporate its new Iris GPU into their laptops. Acer, Asus and Dell are going to try the new GPU, which competes with entry-level chips from Nvidia.
The Intel Iris Xe Max is based on the same architecture that can also be found in other Iris Xe chips or the GPUs in 11th generation Intel mobile processors. However, the Max is equipped with 96 execution units and runs at a frequency of 1.35 GHz, VentureBeat writes.
Comparable to entry-level Nvidia offering
Intel tested the graphics processor against the Nvidia MX350, an Nvidia entry-level GPU based on the same GP107 chip as found in the GeForce GTX 1050 or Quadro P500. The GPUs were compared in several games, and the Iris Xe Max performed largely the same as the MX350, with similar power consumption.
Video editing
According to Intel, the new GPU should really come into its own when running video editing software. With Intel’s Deep Link technology, the chip is said to be 1.78 times faster in Hyper Encode tasks than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080, a high-end desktop GPU that consumes much more power.
Laptops
Acer, Asus and Dell have announced that they will incorporate the chip into some of their laptops. These are the Acer Swift 3x, Asus VivoBook Flip TP470 and Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1. All three of them are mid-range laptops that can be expected to cost roughly 1000 euros.
Expansion of GPU lineup
Intel has been working on improving its graphics processors for some time now. Until now, these chips were only deployed as an addition to Intel’s processors, but the company plans to release separate GPUs for use in desktops and workstations next year.
