The world gets to meet Gemini Ultra. This is Google’s most powerful LLM, which was announced back in December. The model will be immediately testable in Gemini Advanced, Google’s most powerful AI chatbot at the moment. The cost for the AI chatbot is 22 euros per month.

Google is officially launching Gemini Advanced today. It simultaneously says a complete goodbye to the name Bard. Rumours about this had previously surfaced on social media but were not officially confirmed. Now the transition is complete and Google is spreading the news.

Gemini Ultra available

Gemini Pro scales according to the complexity of the task, but does lose out to Gemini Ultra in terms of performance. The latter Google developed to accomplish highly complex tasks. The LLM already proved on tests to be stronger than GPT-4, the most powerful model OpenAI currently has. Only that performance always remained theoretical as the official release of Gemini Ultra lagged behind.

Gemini Ultra’s exact launch date appears to be today. Google is immediately bringing the LLM into Gemini Advanced, the more powerful version of chatbot Gemini. According to Google, this is “a new experience that is much more capable of reasoning, following instructions, coding and being a creative partner.”

Using Gemini Advanced is, however, not free. Users will need to subscribe to the Google One AI Premium plan. The cost for that is 21.99 euros per month. By comparison, a Google One Premium plan costs ten euros a month. Competitor OpenAI charges twenty dollars a month for access to GPT-4 in ChatGPT Plus.

The plan does give access to more services. Google says: “Which offers the best of Google’s AI features in one place.” That is rather vague, and the Google One product page also does not bring clarity. The subscription would still include 2 TB of storage, but further features are described as ‘other Google One Premium benefits’. Moreover, not all features are live yet. For example, the addition of Gemini in Google services such as Gmail and Documents will only follow ‘soon’. This also brings Duet AI, which is now being renamed Gemini for Workspace, to subscriptions for non-business users.

Gemini app

The AI chatbots are also getting a mobile version. Google is making an app for this available today for Android and iOS. It is also possible to reach Gemini via Google Assistant on an Android device. This is a trade-off as the Gemini app will also be equipped with various functionalities of Google Assistant. Think of setting an alarm clock with a voice command. On iOS, Gemini will be available in the Google app.

Gemini’s features are currently only available in the US. The features currently only work in English. The region in which Gemini is available on iOS and Android will be expanded starting next week. Availability in more languages will follow later.
