After a few teasers at the end of last year, Samsung finally showed the Galaxy Fold to the general public. We know the final specifications, availability, price and unique features.
At the end of last year, Samsung very briefly showed a prototype of its foldable smartphone during the Samsung Developer Conference. Everything happened very quickly, the lights were switched off, but it showed clearly which direction the aircraft would go in.
After the very first prototype in 2011, Samsung is ready to present the Galaxy Fold to the general public. The unit closes completely flat with a 21:9 screen on the outside and a 4.2:3 screen on the inside.
Flexible design
The screen on the outside measures 4.6 inches (840 x 1960 pixels) and on the inside 7.2 inches (1,536 x 2,152 pixels). Both amoled screens have a pixel density of 420 dpi.
At the back are the same three cameras as in the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+: classic, wide angle and telefoto (2x optical zoom). At the front there is room for a double selfie camera like the Galaxy S10+. When you close the Galaxy Fold, there is only one selfie camera available.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold uses Samsung’s latest 7 nm octacore Exynos chip and gets 12 GB of RAM. The battery capacity is 4,380mAh and there is support for wireless charging. You can also charge accessories or other smartphones thanks to Wireless PowerShare.
The flexible panel consists of five different layers. The underlay is the flexible amoled panel that we have often been able to admire in conceptdemos. Above that is a flexible layer and an extremely thin Polariser. Above that is a shock-absorbing film and a so-called Cover Window to finish the screen.
Android
Google is working on a better integration of foldable smartphones in Android. The native support means that developers can have their applications and interfaces modified in a standardized way when you fold the phone.
For example, you can watch a YouTube video on a folded screen while you’re on the go, and unfold it when you pop into the sofa at home. The interface automatically adjusts and enlarges the video to take full advantage of the larger screen area.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold will be available from the second quarter and will be available in four colours: Space Silver, Cosmos Black, Martian Green and Astro Blue. The plane will cost $1,980. Euro prices are not yet known.
