A study by IT company Lenovo indicates that the roles of a CIO have undergone drastic changes in the past 24 months. The jobs of CIOs are now spreading beyond technology with the increase in innovation and tech advancements.

CIO responsibilities change

The CIO of a typical IT firm is now responsible for covering diverse areas, including talent acquisition, sustainability, data analytics, and business reporting. Moreover, another challenging head that demands their attention is data privacy to eliminate cybercrimes and ransomware threats. Additionally, CIOs are expected to ensure smooth and streamlined business and technological operations in their respective IT firms.

CIO impact and influence grows

The survey reveals that CIOs’ impact and influence on companies have increased extensively. The primary reason for this is a spike in the invention of innovative and emerging technologies like AI and automation.

According to a survey by Deloitte, 40 percent of CIOs picked emerging technologies as the most impactful technology area for their business in the coming years. CIOs either break or make a company through strategic decisions. Essential areas where CIOs are needed to make gainful arrangements include hybrid working models, data analytics and security, talent hunting and other areas that undergo digital transformation.

“Modern CIOs are the ‘mission control’ for their organizations, their role has transformed drastically in just the span of the past 24 months”, said Ken Wong, President of Lenovo solutions and services group.

“From navigating complex tech ecosystems to keep up with the speed of digital transformation, to upskilling employees and managing a global shortage of IT talent, today’s CIO is responsible for the entire technology value chain and beyond.”
