Eurofiber now offers WDM connections between data centers in six German cities: Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, and Stuttgart. To do so, the company primarily uses the fiber-optic network of NGN Fiber Network, in which it is a shareholder.
The Maarssen, the Netherlands-based company announced the expansion yesterday. The connections run both within and between the six cities. According to Eurofiber, customers receive direct connections with high capacity, low latency, and bandwidth that scales as demand grows. Eurofiber cites cloud and AI workloads as applications, as well as data replication, backup, and business continuity across multiple locations.
Technically, these are WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) connections. This allows multiple data streams, each on its own wavelength, to travel over a single fiber-optic cable. The services are offered under Eurofiber’s own brand.
Building on NGN
In 2021, Eurofiber became a shareholder in the German company NGN Fiber Network. This added approximately 19,000 kilometers of fiber-optic cable to the European network in one fell swoop. According to Eurofiber, NGN now manages a nationwide dark-fiber network of approximately 21,000 kilometers.
Earlier this year, Eurofiber sold its consumer-focused network business in Berlin to focus on B2B infrastructure.
Regional data centers and sovereignty
According to Arian de Korte, International Program Director at Eurofiber, demand for connections between data centers is on the rise. “In Germany, enterprises, cloud service providers and international network providers are increasingly using regional data centers to bring data and applications closer to their operations and users, maintain greater control over their data and strengthen their digital resilience,” he says. According to De Korte, this contributes to their digital sovereignty.
CCO Andrea Kraus emphasizes the connections themselves. “For customers, the value of regional data centers depends increasingly on how well those locations are connected.” According to her, customers want to be able to scale up capacity flexibly and move data quickly.
Eurofiber operates in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, and Luxembourg. It entered the Luxembourg market through the acquisition of LuxNetwork.
